Quick Tips

It’s no surprise that hiking has proven to provide multiple health benefits. From lowering stress levels to improving heart health to even building stronger muscles, hiking is a whole-body workout from head to toe, and everything in between. It’s also considered a low-impact workout which means individuals of all fitness levels can enjoy the trails. But before you head out, we recommend you check out some of our quick tips to ensure your hike is a success.

Get the Right Trail:
Whether you are a new hiker, new to Crescent Trail, or simply new to fitness, we recommend picking a trail that is short and easy to navigate for your first trek. Indian Hill or Mason Valley provide some shorter path options for a quick family adventure while Horizon Hill is more geared toward the avid hiker who may want to spend a few hours exploring the woods. Don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations from your peers on which paths they like best and examine the map closely to ensure you pick the path that makes sense for your fitness level. Remember, ultimately, you’ll want to pace yourself, familiarize yourself with the map, bring along a water bottle and enjoy the sights. Hiking should be relaxing and fun!

Get the Gear:
No matter if you are casually walking the trails or a self-proclaimed modern day explorer, you’ll want to make sure you have comfortable shoes and socks. We recommend athletic sneakers at the very least, but hiking boots are even better if you plan to make Crescent Trail a part of your daily routine. You’ll come across various terrain, mud, and wetness along the path so waterproof boots are ideal, along with wool or synthetic socks. If you’re heading for a long hike, it isn’t a bad idea to bring along a water bottle and light snack. Many hikers bring a light backpack with bug spray, sunscreen, and first-aid supplies to be prepared for just about anything. You’ll also find that dressing layers will be helpful as your own body temperature can fluctuate as hike and layering allows you to comfortably add or remove clothing as needed during your walk.

Get the Map:
Our Silver Foxes have created distinct trail markers within each path, but it doesn’t hurt to be able to reference the map while on the go. Between the #TrailsRoc App and the CTHA printable map, you have a lot of ways to access the map system for Crescent Trail. Before you head out the door, find out if the trail you’re taking on is a loop, if you’ll have to backtrack, or perhaps even spot a second car. Take note of any intersecting trails where you could potentially make a wrong turn. Keep the map nearby on your phone or in your hand so that you can stay connected along the way.

Get the Weather Report:
Before you head outside, check the forecast for rain, snow, and thunderstorms. In the hotter temperatures, you’ll also want to take into consideration that you’ll be more prone to dehydration and sunburns, so you’ll want to wear cooler clothes, a hat and/or sunglasses, apply sunscreen, carry lots of water. You may even want to consider the shady paths within Howell Road Park or Old Post Road. If you’re hitting the trails after a rain, you may also encounter flooding or several mud patches, especially in the High Acres Nature Center trails, The right kind of hiking boots can be a real game-changer.

Get the Friend:
Sure, you may not want to “check in” like you did as a teenager growing up ... but, it’s very important that you tell someone who's not on the hike with you, the proposed itinerary, start time, and potential check-in time to ensure someone knows your whereabouts. It may be difficult to pinpoint how long it’ll take you to finish a trail if you change up walking speeds or happen to encounter a setback, but having someone know where you are is a big comfort to anyone hitting the trails for the day. Another option is to activate your phone’s locator, download a find-me type app like Glympse, or simply charge up your phone. You don’t want to find yourself on a trail with a missing map or a bruised ankle, stay connected and plan ahead. You may even want to consider bringing a hiking buddy with you to experience the fun of the trail. You'll find that time passes much quicker when you have a friend to chat with!
